FAQs

What is wedding insurance?

Wedding insurance provides you with financial protection should something go wrong on or before your wedding and/or reception. Your policy will provide cover against venue or supplier cancellation, illness, severe weather or damage to wedding attire. There are optional extras that can be covered by your wedding insurance policy including marquee hire and ceremonial sword protection. For a deeper walkthrough, read our full guide on what wedding insurance covers.

Reasons to Buy Wedding Insurance

With the average wedding in the UK costing £23,250 in 2024 (according to hitched.co.uk based on a survey of 3,000 couples), it's essential to have financial protection to ensure your big day can proceed smoothly, even if unexpected events occur. Still on the fence? Our guide on whether you need wedding insurance breaks down the maths, and our comparison of wedding insurance vs. Section 75 credit card protection shows where each option stops short. How much wedding cover do I need?

The amount of cover you need depends on your wedding budget. Start by estimating all of your wedding expenses, including those that family members will help pay for. Then, choose a policy that will cover the full amount you could lose if you need to cancel or postpone your wedding. Our guide on how much wedding insurance costs sets out Lovebird's pricing tiers and the cost of optional extras side by side.

When should I take out a wedding insurance policy?

It's advisable to purchase an insurance policy as soon as you have a clear wedding budget established and have made your first payment or deposit to a wedding supplier. Please note that our policies must be purchased at least 30 days before your wedding date. Any payments or deposits made more than 30 days prior to the start date of your insurance policy will not be covered. Additionally, if a wedding supplier goes out of business within 90 days of the policy start date, this will not be covered by the insurance. Our guide on when to buy wedding insurance walks through the timing rules in detail.

Can I insure multiple wedding ceremonies and celebrations?

Our wedding insurance policy allows you to cover up to six wedding events within 90 days of each other.

Who can buy wedding insurance?

Anyone can purchase wedding insurance but the named policyholders must be the couple getting married or entering into a civil partnership. Civil partner registrations and/or ceremonies are also covered.

Payment Information

Wedding insurance payment information:

  • Wedding insurance requires a single one-off payment - monthly payments are not available
  • If parents or in-laws pay for part of the wedding, those purchases are covered as long as payments were made within 30 days of the policy start date and you have receipts
  • You cannot purchase multiple policies to increase coverage, if you need to change any aspect of your policy, please contact us

What is excluded from the policy cover?

Not covered:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Partner getting "cold feet"
  • Honeymoon (requires separate travel insurance)
  • Fireworks and firepits
  • Pregnancy complications (unless the expected date of delivery is at least 2 months after the wedding date)

For the full list with the reasoning behind each exclusion, see our guide on what isn't covered by wedding insurance.

Is there an excess?

Yes. An excess applies to each part of the claim unless otherwise stated. Full details are provided on the quote page and in your policy schedule.

Overseas Weddings

Overseas wedding coverage:

  • We cover overseas weddings if one partner is a UK resident
  • At least one partner must hold a UK passport and live in the UK
  • Country restrictions apply based on advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
