Wedding insurance in the UK does not cover a change of heart (disinclination to marry), pre-existing medical conditions known at the time of purchase, or claims arising from pandemics like COVID-19. Standard policies also strictly exclude government-imposed event restrictions, unwritten supplier agreements, and supplier bankruptcy occurring within the first 90 days of the policy start date.

As an FCA directly authorised insurance distributor (Firm Reference Number: 1015906), Lovebird provides regulated wedding insurance under direct FCA supervision. This requires absolute transparency regarding policy limitations, coverage boundaries, and precise exclusion criteria.

What isn't covered by wedding insurance in the UK?

Wedding insurance policies contain explicit General Exclusions that apply to every section of cover. Claims submitted for excluded events, or where policy conditions such as reporting timeframes are not met, will be declined. Every claim is also subject to an excess deduction, which ranges from £100 to £250 depending on the specific section being claimed against.

Exclusion Category Specific Policy Wording / Limitation Standard Excess Applied
Disinclination to Marry "Disinclination to contract to the marriage as agreed" (change of heart/cold feet). N/A (Total Exclusion)
Known Circumstances Events or circumstances public or known to you at purchase that make a claim inevitable. N/A (Total Exclusion)
Pandemics & Epidemics Losses from infectious diseases, including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) and mutations. N/A (Total Exclusion)
Unreported Theft Theft or malicious damage not reported to the police within 24 hours of discovery. £100 - £250
Unwritten Contracts Any supplier failure or cancellation where no written contractual agreement exists. N/A (Total Exclusion)
Gradual Deterioration Damage caused by wear and tear, moths, vermin, atmospheric conditions, or inherent defects. N/A (Total Exclusion)

Does wedding insurance cover a change of heart?

No. UK wedding insurance policies universally exclude "disinclination to contract to the marriage as agreed." Financial losses incurred because either partner decides not to proceed with the wedding, experiences a relationship breakdown, or fails to obtain the relevant legal documentation will not be reimbursed under any section of the policy.

The only exception relating to a cancelled marriage applies specifically to the Professional Counselling cover. Lovebird policies provide up to £1,000 for recommended professional counselling if the wedding is permanently cancelled due to the death of either partner, or if one partner elects not to continue with the marriage. This covers the medical support costs, but does not cover the irrecoverable wedding expenses.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?

No. Claims arising from specific pre-existing medical circumstances involving the marrying couple or any relative upon whose health the wedding depends are explicitly excluded. Coverage relies entirely on the medical status at the exact date and time the policy is purchased.

The policy specifically excludes claims if, prior to purchasing the insurance, the relevant individual:

  • Has received a terminal diagnosis.
  • Is awaiting or undergoing treatment or investigation at a hospital or specialist clinic.
  • Is awaiting the results of any tests or medical investigations.
  • Is on a hospital waiting list for treatment.
  • Is acting against the advice of a qualified Medical Practitioner.

Mental health conditions are also strictly limited. Claims arising from anxiety, stress, or depression are excluded unless the bride, groom, or civil partner is admitted as an inpatient at a recognised hospital.

Is COVID or pandemic cancellation covered in 2026?

No. Lovebird policies exclude all claims or losses arising directly or indirectly from COVID-19, any new variants or mutations of SARS-CoV-2, or any widespread occurrence of an infectious disease defined as an Epidemic or Pandemic. This applies equally to cancellations, rearranged dates, and supplier non-appearances.

The UK wedding insurance market treats pandemic risk differently depending on the underwriter. While Lovebird and some other providers apply blanket exclusions for all transmitted diseases and pandemics, some other providers offer optional COVID extensions for an additional premium, covering limited scenarios such as a confirmed positive test preventing the marrying couple from attending. No UK policy currently covers government-imposed lockdowns or legal restrictions on guest numbers.

Does wedding insurance cover pregnancy?

Standard pregnancy and childbirth are excluded from cancellation and rearrangement cover. Wedding insurance treats normal pregnancy as a foreseeable life event rather than an unforeseen medical emergency.

Cover is only provided in the event of "serious medical complications related to a pregnancy or childbirth." For a cancellation claim to be valid under these terms, the expected date of confinement (due date) must be more than 2 months after the scheduled Wedding Date. If the wedding is booked within 2 months of the expected delivery date, no cover is provided for pregnancy-related cancellations, regardless of complications.

What other exclusions should I check?

Supplier financial failure cover contains strict time limitations. Financial failure (bankruptcy or liquidation) is only covered if it occurs at least 90 days after the policy start date. Furthermore, any deposits paid to a supplier more than 30 days before the policy start date are excluded from cover.

Based on Lovebird policy data (2025-2026), the average wedding insured is worth £19,377, and customers purchase their policy an average of 284 days before the wedding date. Purchasing well in advance ensures the 90-day supplier failure exclusion period expires long before the final supplier balances are paid.

Other critical exclusions include:

  • Government Acts: Losses arising from prohibitive regulations, changes in law, or restrictions on guest numbers (including social distancing or mask mandates) are excluded.
  • Unattended Items: Theft from unattended vehicles is excluded unless the property is concealed in a locked boot or glove compartment and there is evidence of visible, forcible entry. Theft from unattended venues requires forcible entry or exit.
  • Geographical Limits: Weddings occurring outside the UK must have separate travel insurance in place. Policies exclude any wedding in a destination the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against travel to.
  • Specific Liabilities: Liability arising from bouncy castles, fireworks, firearms, or damage to flooring caused by footwear is excluded. Optional extensions are required for Marquees (selected by ~2% of customers) and Guest Public Liability (£5m limit selected by ~13% of customers).

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my policy pay out if my venue goes bankrupt immediately after I buy insurance?

No. Cover for the financial failure of suppliers only applies if the bankruptcy or liquidation occurs at least 90 days after your policy start date. If a venue ceases trading within the first 89 days of the policy, the claim is excluded.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered if I get a doctor's note?

No. If anyone essential to the wedding has received a terminal diagnosis, is on a waiting list for treatment, or is awaiting test results at the time you purchase the policy, claims relating to that condition are strictly excluded, regardless of subsequent medical clearance.

Is my wedding dress covered if it gets damaged before the wedding?

Ceremonial attire is covered for loss or damage while in your possession within 3 months prior to the wedding. However, claims caused by gradual deterioration, wear and tear, moths, or attempting to clean, dye, or repair the dress are excluded.

What happens if bad weather stops my wedding?

Cancellation or rearrangement due to adverse weather is covered if it causes major disruption to travel services preventing the couple or guests from reaching the venue. However, it is excluded if the adverse weather was publicly forecast when you bought the policy.
