Wedding insurance in the UK covers irrecoverable financial losses up to £100,000 if your wedding is unavoidably cancelled or rearranged. Standard policies cover venue failure, supplier bankruptcy, extreme weather, and loss or damage to ceremonial attire, rings, and gifts. Based on Lovebird policy data (2025-2026), the average UK wedding insured is worth £19,377.

As an FCA directly authorised insurance distributor (Firm Reference Number: 1015906), Lovebird provides regulated wedding insurance under direct FCA supervision. Lovebird policies are co-manufactured with Acasta European Insurance Company Limited and all eligible claims are fully protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

What does wedding cancellation and rearrangement cover include?

Cancellation cover reimburses irrecoverable expenses for ceremonial attire, flowers, photography, catering, transport, accommodation, and booked venue services if your wedding or reception is unavoidably cancelled. Rearrangement cover reimburses the reasonable additional costs required to rearrange the wedding to a similar standard.

According to the Lovebird policy wording, cancellation and rearrangement cover is valid when caused by:

  • Venue failure: The booked venue is unable to hold your event due to an outbreak of infectious disease (excluding COVID-19), physical damage to the premises, murder or suicide at the premises, or formal closure by a relevant authority.
  • Death, illness, or injury: The death, severe sickness, or injury of the marrying couple or a Close Relative (e.g., parents, siblings, grandparents) which makes continuing the wedding inappropriate.
  • Supplier non-appearance: The unforeseen and total non-appearance of any pre-booked and paid professional wedding services supplier on the day of the wedding.
  • Redundancy: The redundancy of the marrying couple or any relative making proven, significant financial contributions to the wedding. Notice of redundancy must be received at least 8 weeks after the policy schedule is issued.
  • Military or emergency deployment: The unforeseen overseas posting of a serving member of the UK armed forces, or unavoidable duty for emergency personnel (police, fire, coastguard, ambulance) involving the couple or a Close Relative.
  • Registrar absence: The non-appearance of the officiating minister or registrar.
  • Attire destruction: Accidental complete loss of or severe damage to Ceremonial Attire rendering the items unwearable, provided alternatives cannot be purchased or hired.

Key cancellation exclusions

You cannot claim for cancellation under the following circumstances:

  • Disinclination to marry or failure to comply with legal requirements.
  • Government regulations or acts, other than specific venue closures.
  • Pregnancy, unless serious medical complications arise where the expected date of confinement (due date) is more than 2 months after the wedding date.
  • Anxiety, stress, or depression, unless the bride, groom, or civil partner is admitted as an inpatient at a recognised hospital.
  • Financial circumstances, except in cases of qualifying redundancy.

Does wedding insurance cover supplier failure?

Supplier failure cover reimburses irrecoverable deposits and additional costs incurred to arrange an alternative supplier if a pre-booked wedding service provider goes into bankruptcy or liquidation. This applies to contracted photographers, florists, transport providers, venues, caterers, and entertainers.

This cover is highly specific regarding timing and financial status. Cover commences 14 days after the premium is paid. Based on Lovebird claims data and policy terms, supplier failure is excluded under the following conditions:

  • The 90-day rule: Any costs arising from a supplier's financial failure, bankruptcy, or liquidation that occur within 90 days of the policy start date are excluded. Customers typically purchase policies an average of 284 days before the wedding, safely bypassing this exclusion period.
  • Pre-existing administration: No cover is provided if the supplier was already in administration, a voluntary arrangement, or subject to a winding-up petition at the time the policy was purchased or the contract was signed.
  • Breach of contract: Insurance covers legal bankruptcy and liquidation. It does not cover a supplier simply failing to perform their contractual obligations or delivering substandard work (this is a civil breach of contract issue).
  • Wedding planners: The financial failure of a professional wedding planner is explicitly excluded from standard supplier failure cover.
  • Lack of documentation: Claims are invalid if no written contractual agreement exists between the marrying couple and the supplier.

What items are covered — attire, gifts, rings, and ceremonial items?

Wedding insurance provides physical property cover for the core components of the event. Coverage limits scale based on the policy tier selected, and distinct timeframes apply to different categories of items.

Ceremonial and Bridal Attire

Cover applies to the reinstatement or replacement of clothing and accessories for the couple, attendants, and parents. Protection begins 3 months prior to the wedding and lasts for the duration of the event (including professional photographs immediately following). For hired attire, cover extends for up to 48 hours after the wedding commences.

If bridal or ceremonial attire owned by the couple is damaged after the start of the ceremony, the maximum payable limit is capped at 75% of the item's new value. Wear and tear deductions apply to all attire claims.

Wedding Rings, Flowers, and Cake

These items are protected against loss or accidental damage, but strict timings apply:

  • Rings: Cover commences 7 days prior to the wedding and expires 24 hours after.
  • Flowers and Cake: Cover commences 36 hours prior to the wedding and expires 24 hours after.

Wedding Gifts

Gifts are covered against accident, fire, or theft while stored by the couple or a Close Relative, while in transit, or on display at the reception. Cover commences 7 days prior to the wedding and expires 24 hours after the reception. The policy imposes a strict single-item limit of £250 for any individual gift, and specific limits apply to cash and vouchers based on the policy tier. Theft claims require evidence of violent and forcible entry if stolen from a vehicle, home, or venue.

Ceremonial Swords (Optional Cover)

A niche extension available for military and specific cultural ceremonies (such as Sikh weddings). This covers loss or damage to borrowed or hired swords and regalia 7 days prior to the wedding and 48 hours after. Based on Lovebird data, ceremonial swords cover is selected by approximately 0.1% of policyholders.

Does wedding insurance cover bad weather?

Wedding insurance covers cancellation or rearrangement if severe weather prevents the marrying couple, or a majority of the guests, from reaching the wedding or reception venue. The policy defines Adverse Weather as conditions causing major disruption to travel services (rail, road, or bus).

There are two critical limitations regarding weather claims:

  1. No claim can be made if warnings of adverse weather or natural catastrophes were already in the public domain at the time the policy was purchased.
  2. General rainy or overcast weather that forces an outdoor wedding inside does not constitute "Adverse Weather" for the purposes of a cancellation claim.

What does wedding insurance public liability cover?

Public liability cover protects against legal liability and legal expenses arising from accidental third-party injury or accidental loss or damage to third-party property occurring during the event. This cover commences 24 hours before the scheduled wedding date and expires 24 hours after.

It is critical to distinguish between personal liability (Standard) and guest liability (Optional):

Section 11: Public Liability for the Marrying Couple

Standard policy tiers provide £2,000,000 in legal liability cover exclusively for the actions of the bride, groom, or civil partners. It does not provide indemnity for liabilities arising from the actions of anyone else. This section excludes liability arising from the use of vehicles, animals (other than your domestic pets), contractual agreements, or bouncy castles/inflatables. A £250 excess applies to every claim.

Section 12: Optional Guest Personal Liability

Venues frequently require couples to hold liability insurance that covers the actions of their attendees. Guest personal liability is an optional extension that covers the legal liability of invited guests for accidental injury or property damage they cause. Based on Lovebird policy data (2025-2026), approximately 13% of customers opt for the £5,000,000 guest public liability extension.

What isn't covered by wedding insurance?

Under FCA Consumer Duty rules, insurers must be completely transparent regarding exclusions.. A wedding insurance policy is not a blanket guarantee. The General Exclusions applicable to all sections of a Lovebird policy include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions: No cover is provided if any of the marrying couple, or a relative upon whose health the wedding depends, has received a terminal diagnosis or is awaiting results of tests/investigations at the time of purchase.
  • Pandemics and Epidemics: Claims arising directly or indirectly from any Pandemic or Epidemic (including COVID-19 or any mutations) are strictly excluded.
  • Known circumstances: Events or circumstances of which you were aware, or that were public knowledge at the time of buying the policy, that make a claim inevitable.
  • Change of heart: Disinclination to contract to the marriage as agreed.
  • Destination restrictions: No cover is provided for weddings outside the UK unless separate travel insurance is in place. Furthermore, cover is invalid in countries where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against travel.
  • Unattended theft: Loss or theft from unattended venues or vehicles is excluded unless involving forcible or violent entry or exit.

Wedding insurance vs credit card Section 75 protection — what's the difference?

Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 makes credit card providers jointly liable with suppliers for breaches of contract or misrepresentation for purchases between £100 and £30,000. While highly valuable, Section 75 is not a substitute for wedding insurance. Section 75 only protects the specific transaction made on the credit card, whereas wedding insurance protects the entire event against external risks.

Scenario / Risk Section 75 Credit Card Protection Lovebird Wedding Insurance
Supplier bankruptcy/liquidation Covers the specific deposit/amount paid on the card. Covers deposits AND the additional cost to book a replacement supplier.
Breach of contract (supplier doesn't deliver) Covered. Credit card provider is jointly liable. Not covered. Insurance requires legal bankruptcy/liquidation.
Venue catches fire or floods Not covered. The venue hasn't breached contract. Covered under Cancellation & Rearrangement limits.
Death or severe illness in family Not covered. Covered. Reimburses all irrecoverable costs across all suppliers.
Severe weather prevents attendance Not covered. Covered. Reimburses costs to rearrange the event.
Guest accidentally damages venue Not covered. Covered (if optional Guest Public Liability extension is selected).

How much does Wedding Insurance Cost?

Wedding insurance premiums with Lovebird start at just £9 for a budget £1,000 wedding. Based on Lovebird's 2025-2026 data, the average premium paid for a UK wedding insurance policy is £59.20. At the upper-end, we regular insure overseas multi-events for over £400.

Premiums are driven entirely by the maximum cancellation limit selected and any optional extensions added. For example, adding Marquee Cover (selected by approximately 2% of customers) will increase the premium, as it introduces cover for temporary staging, chairs, tables, and ancillary equipment for a hire period of up to 5 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I buy wedding insurance?

You must purchase wedding insurance at least 30 days before the wedding date. Based on Lovebird data, customers purchase policies an average of 284 days before their wedding. Purchasing early ensures you are protected immediately against supplier failure (subject to the 90-day exclusion rule) and unforeseen illnesses.

No, cover starts from the day you purchase the policy. Financial losses resulting from payments made before the commencement date of this policy are specifically excluded in the policy wording.

Does wedding insurance cover honeymoon cancellation?

No, wedding insurance does not cover honeymoon travel or accommodation. You must purchase a separate travel insurance policy to cover risks associated with your honeymoon.

Is my marquee covered under standard wedding insurance?

No, standard policies exclude temporary structures. You must select the Optional Marquee Extension, which provides indemnity for loss or damage to the marquee and staging during a hire period not exceeding 5 days.

Do I have to pay an excess if I make a claim?

Yes, a standard excess of £100 applies to each and every claim under Sections 1 to 9 (Cancellation, Attire, Suppliers, Gifts). A higher excess of £250 applies to liability claims and the optional marquee and ceremonial swords extensions.
